Safety first at Directline Structures

Design and build contractor, Directline Structures recently received recognition for the company’s outstanding commitment to health and safety with the presentation of an award from Construction Safety (South East) Limited.

This award, which is presented annually reflects the consistently high health and safety standards achieved by Directline Structures. This particular nomination was for their work at Wilmington Grammar School for Boys in Wilmington, Kent.

The project which, was, undertaken for Kent County Council was for a multi storey classroom block

Construction Safety (South East) Ltd asked its Safety Advisors to nominate a site from their area of responsibility. These sites were then visited by their General Manager who undertook a scoring procedure. Then in the spirit of the award unannounced visits occurred to ensure that sites met the exacting demands of the award at all times.

On receiving the award Elaine Burgess, Health and Safety Co-ordinator at Directline Structures said, “It is great to be recognised for the standard of our site and that the measures we take to conform to health and safety regulations are working. The safety of our site personnel and members of the public are paramount to us.”

A shield of honours board is maintained at Construction Safety (South East) Ltd’s offices in Maidstone.

ASTRON MSB ready to start the new school term!
British Builder Directline Stuctures is getting something of a reputation as a specialist in school buildings! The company has already built completed projects for four schools, including two for the same.

The company is currently working on three projects all for the same customer Kent County Council. Its latest venture is a 3 floor MSB building for Wilmington Grammar School for Boys in Dartford.

The UK has a great tradition of building in steel, so competition for the project was fierce. Nevertheless, only Directline Construction Ltd and ASTRON's MSB approach were able to come up with an economical solution while meeting the strict specification required to conform to government regulations regarding acoustics and ventilation in public buildings.

The objective was to replace old, temporary classrooms with twelve new classrooms, together with reception areas, sanitation and toilet facilities, and so forth, within a rather limited amount of space!

Neither major earthmoving works nor the use of cranes on the job site within the college compound was permissible, so the UK Builder developed a novel solution that was easy and rapid to erect using lightweight floors made of C-profiles provided by Lindab. Pupils were therefore able to attend, and concentrate on, their courses without being disturbed while construction proceeded at a rapid pace.

The new multi-story school building with its
mansard roof blends in nicely and complements the existing building. Open interior space with our intermediate columns contribute to a highly functional and pleasing interior.

Highly satisfied by Directline's efficiency and professionalism, the client declared:

"This is a very competitive build-cost at under £1000 per square meter, significantly lower than any other recently built Kent County Council project."
